Abrams at Georgia Southern: “People shouldn’t have to go into agriculture” to make a living

Democratic candidate for Governor of Georgia is taking heat after she told a crowd at Georgia Southern University that people “shouldn’t have to go into agriculture” and promised to create “ a lot of different jobs.”

Pro Roof GA

The statement was made on her “Our Voices. Our Votes. Our Time” tour in which Abrams has been touring the state with other Democratic candidates and leaders ahead of Election Day. It was recorded on video by someone in attendance at the rally that took place Tuesday evening.

You can listen to the clip in which Abrams also discusses hospitality here.

Georgia Southern is located in Statesboro in southeast Georgia’s Bulloch County – a farming community surrounded by a number of other predominantly agricultural communities. Georgia has 9.6 million acres of land devoted to farms and more than 42,000 individual farms across the state, each with an average farm size of 228 acres. Agriculture is a $73 billion industry in the Peach State. One in seven Georgians work in agriculture, forestry, or related fields.

The clip is brief, so AllOnGeorgia reached out to the Abrams campaign Wednesday seeking comment and clarification. As of publishing, the Abrams campaign had not responded.

***UPDATE*** Abrams campaign provided a statement at 7:00 P.M.

From Abrams campagin spokeswoman Abigail Collazo:

This is an absurdly misleading attack from someone who has plans to kill Georgia’s hospitality industry by signing discriminatory legislation like RFRA and who has personally guaranteed $10 million in loans for a company that defrauded farmers – actions Governor Nathan Deal’s administration has said may be a felony under Georgia law. And while Stacey Abrams believes all Georgians — including farmers and hospitality workers — should have access to affordable health care, Brian Kemp has continued to staunchly oppose Medicaid expansion. Abrams is the only candidate with detailed plans to invest in rural Georgia by creating good-paying jobs, expanding access to broadband, and investing in rural educators and students. It is clear that Brian Kemp’s go-to tactic has become lying about Stacey Abrams’ bold plans and detailed policy proposals in order to cover up the fact that he has none of his own.”

The Kemp campaign was quick to respond to the video now circulating . Press Secretary for the Kemp campaign Cody Hall said in a statement published Wednesday:

“While Stacey Abrams was building her national profile on ‘Meet the Press,’ Brian Kemp was down in Southwest Georgia to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Michael and discuss the storm’s effect on our state’s agriculture industry.

Days later, Stacey Abrams took a bus out of Atlanta to avoid question about her plan to let illegal immigrants vote and Brian Kemp traveled to Savannah in support of Georgia tourism and our local elected officials.

Brian Kemp understands the incredible impact that agriculture and tourism have on our state. He values the sacrifices made by our farmers to feed their family and ours. Kemp knows that tourism drives local economies throughout our state – creating jobs and economic opportunity for people of all walks of life.

Stacey Abrams brash and condescending comments undermine our most valued industries and disparage hardworking Georgians in every corner of our state. We need a governor who backs Georgia farmers – instead of attacking them during a crisis. We need a governor like Brian Kemp who will stand with those in the hospitality business – instead of telling workers they should find another job.”

Here's Stacey Abrams insulting the farmers and hospitality workers of Georgia as if they're inferior. She says these people should instead go into "renewable energy jobs because, I'm going to tell y'all a secret: climate change is real."Forget the last part — why insult agriculture workers and hospitality workers to make your climate change point? We can't all live in Atlanta and we don't all want to either.

See, Stacy thinks food comes from Walmart. She has never cropped tobacco, baled hay, or even grown a tomato in a backyard garden, but she has not paid her bills, taxes or repaid her student loans, but she has and is working the system. Governor, PLEASE???

Well said. I am was just wondering where she thinks food comes from. I come from a long line of farmers. During the depression, my Daddy ran the farm at 15 years of age while my grandfather worked for the county teaching others how to farm. God bless the Farmer and the families supported by this work. Tara – I don’t know what or if you eat but if you do I can assure you that the food you are ingesting comes from a farmer somewhere on the planet unless you have grown all your own food and then, more importantly, YOU are the farmer….think about that. As far as FOX news goes – do you object to people having a source of news that is different from yours? I might suggest OAN (I think that’s correct) if you would like to hear another point of view other than FOX. Thank you for listening to my opinion.

Tara, what part of this are you saying isn’t true? You can’t just make a blanket statement about something not being true without qualifying your comment. Some rebuttal facts would be a nice touch. We have forgotten how to intelligently debate nowadays and simply revert to saying “not true” followed by some insult.

Half of “Georgia” is metro Atlanta area. They don’t care about the rest. This is a national problem, not just for Georgia. And the big cities governed by Democrats are where most of the voter fraud is. And that is where Clinton almost got elected, just as Atlanta may elect this woman.

California’s agricultural abundance includes more than 400 commodities. Over a third of the country’s vegetables and two-thirds of the country’s fruits and nuts are grown in California. California is the leading US state for cash farm receipts, accounting for over 13 percent of the nation’s total agricultural value.

She wasn’t putting down farmers. Listen to that entire portion of the recording. Her intent, despite poor choice of words, is that southern Georgians shouldn’t have to leave the region to pursue their dreams if they are outside of agribusiness or hospitality. If you choose that life, good for you. Farming is a good life. So are medicine, technology, and many other fields that aren’t easy to find jobs in around south GA.

It’s hilarious that the people that are disagreeing with Scott’s open-minded opinion, and probable meaning by Mrs. Abrams speech, would not pass 3rd grade English? If you all need to continue your education, so that you can choose the career of your choice (use your context clues), Abrams also supports the HOPE scholarship! She’s already pushed for free tuition to technical colleges and super low rates on student loadn. Her main education goal is to get more need-based aid so that every legal Georgia resident can receive a better chance to pay for their career path. Hey, if you need to go back a little earlier, Abrams will ensure that your teacher is better taken care of financially! Love, your Gawja Liberal

          • Meejer

            July 17, 2020 at 10:54 am

People “who” are disagreeing. Comma after “opinion” is wrong. “you all”: “all of you”. “so you can” not “so that you can”. “She has” not “She’s” which is the contraction for “She is”. “loans” not “loadn” (whatever that is). And finally… what does a teacher being taken care of financially have to do with anyone else needing to back to school a little earlier? This Sentence does not convey an idea, it’s a dijointed mess. 3rd grade English indeed.

      • Fallon Rae

        October 22, 2018 at 9:54 am

Clearly she disdains these industries. You can twist it any way you like. More people at the trough suits her better. Job security for reallocationists of the resources of others. And since Scott Elmondres does not exist (look “him” up, Google or Facebook or anywhere) I would be very careful believing any of “his” posts here to be what he says they are- “reasonable” posts from a conservative. Yes, let us speak honestly, perhaps about her hundreds of thousands of dollars in student, credit card, and unpaid back tax debt? Several times higher in each category than the national average? Honesty is such a rare quality these days. Especially on the left.

We folks in Georgia have farms for the fun of it. We know that all we have to do is go to the grocery store and buy food….. But farmers like to ride in tractors and have other big, fun, farm machinery to play on out in the fields. Their wives go to the grocery store where the real food comes from. We folks in Georgia and illiterate and dumb….. DUH!!!! Oh, and cotton is grown so folks can have cotton balls. And people say it is for clothing…. little to they know it is all about cotton balls in Walmart and CVS.

    • Sandy Ethier

It’s scary the number of people who claim to be conservative yet don’t espouse the conservative values of being slow to speak and quick to listen. If you listen for ten seconds before and ten seconds after the comment that is blowing everyone up, you’ll find that she’s NOT talking down farming and hospitality, she’s saying that right now they’re the primary industries that people end up “falling back” on.

I come from a farming family. I know what it’s like to shuck corn and pick okra and break beans and work out in the heat of the sun. It’s good, hard, honest work, and I would NOT want someone in the field with me who sees it as anything other than a good way of life they chose for themselves. Same with the hospitality industry. Do you really want someone who isn’t hospitable working in the hospitality industry because it’s all they find to do? Oh heck no.

Now, I may disagree with Stacey on most things but I’m not going to let people’s words be twisted out from under them. That’s not Christian, and that’s sure as heck not conservative. Some of y’all trigger as fast – if not faster – than the liberals you like to mock. Kemp’s not a conservative if he plays off of a sound clip taken out of context; he’s just another politician.

Stop making conservatives look like trigger-happy crazies. The rest of us fought too hard for our ideals to be made look a fool by people who don’t take time to think things through.

It is not right to not pay your student debts and your taxes on your business. Those are generational contracts to future citizens. And no sob stories- we paid every penny putting my husband through undergrad and law school, did not get a job paying almost $100K a year, and have paid every penny of taxes we ever owed, including benefits for employees and ourselves. We cut back on things such as technology, clothing, cars, groceries. She clearly has zero personal control. She is a crook, nothing more and nothing less. Now she wants to steal MORE. Good grief.

I don’t believe she was putting down agriculture at all. People are so quick to take things people say out of context. Of course they are both relying on donors. My concern is why those outside our state think they need to influence our governor’s race (or any others, for that matter).

They are referring to the low percentage of people in California who have a clue about the necessity of agriculture, not about the amount of agriculture or products. You may have to admit ignorance about the ratio of fruit loops to fruit out on the West Coast.

You need to get your factsstraight. He purged no voters. Stacy said 53,000 registered voters were not being able to vote because they were in restriction. Not so, they can all vote as long asthey can show proper ID. I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO SHOW ID NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE.

Why is it wrong to enforce the law regarding voter registration? That is what the Secretary of State is elected to do. The can vote if the go to the poll and show proper ID. Simple as that. Then they can cast their vote for whomever they choose to vote for. It’s the American way…follow the law, and the rules like everyone else!

    • Linda

      October 18, 2018 at 6:48 pm

The law requires that the voters list match. They can still cast a ballot, but must show proof of residence. Several states have the same requirement.

    • Scott Elmondres

      October 17, 2018 at 11:44 pm

Hello, Nancy. For the sake of credibility, I’d like you to share with me a primary source that shows Soros, in his own words (preferably video) saying he hates the United States. I’ve searched using Yahoo, Bing, and DuckDuckGo and can’t find one anywhere from any credible, reputable source.

Second, there’s significant proof that the vilification of Soros is part of a Russian anti-American operation to destabilize the U.S.A. using misinformation. this quote is from Forbes, a right-leaning pro-capitalist financial news outfit:

“It was in Russia that the orchestrated anti-Soros campaign first surfaced, where his foundations first suffered expulsion. Soros used his fortune to save pro-Western anti-Kremlin civil society across the Eastern Bloc from Tbilisi to the Baltic. For which, naturally, the Kremlin owed him massive payback. But here’s the rub: Soros’s mission never aimed at weakening national identities, rather the reverse. His foundations encouraged national figures to reconsolidate cultural memory before and after Russian domination. Remember that Sovietism was the first globalist, ‘internationalist’, movement. Soros opposed its lingering epiphenomena. What he does support is a strong Europe, the penetration of European values into the former Iron Curtain countries – which also incites the Kremlin’s hostility.”

If you’re going to call yourself conservative, be educated. Parroting the Soros false narrative makes the rest of us look loony.

      • Fallon Rae

        October 22, 2018 at 10:06 am

Another equivocating post from “Scott”? Forbes has not been “right-leaning” for a long time, and is a case study on how conservatives have lost institutions. That comment was made by a contributor, no more or less credible than you or I. And it has little to do with the fact that Soros bankrolls leftist causes with impunity. Some on the record, much not. So it was “the Russians”? Please.

Here is the most recent profile of Ms. Adams’ campaign donations. Read the right-hand column. I would prefer that the Soros’ and their corporations and unions paid her debts, amirite? But there it is, like it or not.

          October 22, 2018 at 10:26 am

A quick addendum- Soros has always used his money to create policy. I think it was best put by hungary’s PM Orbin- who has been compared to Putin by the modern left, but who has the interests of his country as his foremost concern, whereas Soros has no such loyalties.

“Uncle George (referring to Soros and his machinations for mass immigration of asylum seekers)- we are fighting an enemy that is different from us. Not open but hiding; not straightforward but crafty; not honest but base; not national but international; does not believe in working but speculates with money; does not have its own homeland but feels it owns the world.”

His “liberal world Democracy” has destablized and manipulated. Just ask the Bank of England. It is what he does. If not Soros, where is the money coming from that is being handed out in videos to Hondurans to overrun OUR country? Just food for thought.

Exactly what policies will Abrams enact that will hurt Ga? What policies will Kemp enact that will hurt Ga? What policies by Kemp will help Ga? What policies by Abrams will help Ga? Too many people can be so single minded, to have a perceived bias of a candidate. What issues really affect your day to day lives. Her speech was not one of putting down agriculture or hospitality. It was to let people know that there is more opportunity. That she is willing to invest in bringing more types of jobs to rural areas. Have you seen any present members of the majority actually pushing new industries in rural areas. My hometown hospital is constantly on the brink of closing. I would ad that conservatives or republicans are quick to say that agriculture is the back bone of Ga. I agree it is part of it. They also tell you that immigration is a problem. Yet when Ga big farms need to bring in their crops its on the back of those same immigrants. They tell you something but they wont pass laws to prove it. There comes a time when you should not be voting against your better interest. Progress is good if led properly.

I attended this rally at Georgia Southern and heard every word of Stacey Abram’s speech. She is a positive force and clearly articulated her desire to expand the type of jobs we have in So. GA. Employees in hospitality and agriculture are vastly underpaid and under served, many work without receiving benifits at all. Stacey Abrams will work to get benefits for these people as well as work to bring more opportunities for employment to rural communities Giving people an opportunity to make a sustainable, higher than a minimum wage, living. Republicans have had control of this state, completely, held every state wide elected position for the last 16 years. It is time for some balance. Vote for Stacey Abrams.

  32. Eric

    October 18, 2018 at 12:31 pm

All the Abrams haters on here are quick to be offended.`She wasn’t denigrating farmers. I think the larger point that all the Atlanta haters in South Georgia would appreciate is that you shouldn’t have to move to Atlanta to work in other industries other than agriculture. This state is too lopsided when it comes to opportunities. If you can make a six-figure salary in a tech job without having to live in the rat race of Atlanta, then wouldn’t that be preferable?

    • Michael B.

      October 18, 2018 at 9:10 pm

You can actually make a six-figure income in agriculture or forestry. In 2015 the timber industry alone brought in $35 billion and that’s just a small portion of our agriculture as a whole. That’s essentially where she’s out of touch. Precision agriculture and precision forestry are tech jobs. We rely on drones, spatial analysis, remote sensing, environmental data analysis, soil analysis, farming implement advancement, etc… Center pivot agriculture is actually amazing technology and it’s a foundation of modern agriculture today.

I’m a forestry graduate student at UGA and a majority of what I do is statistical coding in R or Python and remote sensing in the field and that’s a massive part of what modern agriculture is. The city mindset is that of us being out of touch poor bumpkins who just don’t know any better and are stuck in agriculture, but we keep up just fine. Oh, and we also provide food and timber products for homes and businesses. It’s honestly a great time to be in agriculture and it’s only getting better.

That said, some people have ignorant comments on here (go figure, it’s a comment section) but you can’t win people over this way. There are plenty of people I know in my field or similar who are on the fence with Kemp, but he understands the role agriculture plays in our state.

  33. Valorie Matthews

    October 18, 2018 at 1:21 pm

thus spoke Hillary Clinton, May 2, 2008 in a W. Virginia rally:

“I’m the only candidate which has a policy about how to bring economic opportunity using clean renewable energy as the key into coal country. Because we’re going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business, right?”

Insult the blue collars of the world and this nation…you suffer their indignation of belittling generational work and work ethic.

People fail to realize in this day…blue collar laborers in construction make between $18 and $35 an hour based on the type of work. For those laborers that toughed it out and became tradesmen and craftsmen…I know lead carpenters that make $200,000 a year as employees to large premium window manufacturers.

If you’re not afraid to work through the process of learning what you can do with you hands plus your brain…whether agricultural or construction…with enough experience, you will make more money than most lawyers and IT types and a lot more work given the huge number of lawyers and IT types that come out of the lawyer and IT mills. There’s no competition in the trades vs. the number of lawyers and IT types that get churned out each day.

She’s appealing to a socialistic class of people that don’t want to work by denigrating a large portion of the State.

I am a homebuilder…since 1972. Please don’t tell me about paying people minimum wage. Construction types start off at day labor rates and work up to trade and craftsman rates…but even the day labor rates are considerably better than what gets paid to that moron in Starbucks selling you a $5.00 cup of coffee. Anyone that goes into construction or agriculture labor at the low end and stays there…it’s their choice. If you come to me willing to tote lumber on your shoulders and then move on to nailing lumber or marking, cutting or reading a framing square to roof pitch and heel height….damn straight I’m paying to hang on to you.

Obama did one thing for construction. Not a damn thing….he and Hillary both tried to kill the blue collar forces as if the good working folks were untouchables.

I really don’t want a Socialist anywhere in the room with me. It never worked in any country and in the 3rd world countries the downbeat population finally fell to being part of a communist governing body. Stacy Abrams is a twit of the mid-range denominator without any ideas except trying to get elected to let others push her buttons.

Why vote for the candidate who voted against abortion on demand after 20 weeks? That’s murder and you know I am talking about Abrams. The candidate who voted against higher property taxes and lower income taxes. Check her voting record. The one who wants to make Georgia a sanctuary state. Surely she knows that with all the good illegals also comes international criminals when there are no restrictions. Why not invite the gangs to your children’s prom? You know I don’t recall Dr. King saying we should sandblast the faces off stone mountain. That is the difference between a good man who wants to bridge and build good relations amongst neighbors and someone who wants to keep everyone fighting in a tit for tat gang style feud. Love God, Love your Neighbor and take care of the people of Georgia. That is what I am looking for in a Governor. That is why I am voting for Kemp. Good luck and God bless.

Let’s NOT forget — UNDER TRUMP — FARMERS are having a hard time moving produce overseas, because of the tariffs. They are now receiving WELFARE BENEFITS.

Who is Willing to work the Farming FIELDS from Sun up ~~ SUN DOWN. for LESS than Minimum Wages ??
Mexican – Majority — manually WORK THE FARMING FIELDS Even in the High HEAT. Have you visited a FARM?? The FARMERS RELY ON the IMMIGRANT workers, in which, they are forced into deportation. TRUMP has kept HIS IMMIGRANT WORKERS.

Farming is not a Bad JOB. Farmers have came a LONG WAY with today’s technology. “Technology” that has helped to down size the WORK NEED for “FIELD LABORERS”.
A LOT OF the FARM OWNERS — DO NOT MANUALLY WORK the fields — they hire others — MAJORITY MEXICANS.
Are you WILLING TO SEND YOUR CHILDREN to work the fields??? Give up the luxurious life coming home from SCHOOL…..
Are you WILLING TO “give up” YOUR INDOOR Job for the. Outdoor JOB To working the FIELDS picking various products “MANUALLY”??
The pay maybe BELOW MINIMUM WAGE.

IF so then — go ahead and QUIT YOUR JOB– and follow YOUR DREAM — of working ROW by ROW in ACRES of LAND. THE BENDING ALL DAY — IS REQUIRED. YOU are not to fear SNAKES, and whatsoever.

The Black Race during Slavery time — DID NOT HAVE A CHOICE of the wages they wanted to earn. It was either get out THERE, or get WHIPPED.

MY dad, and mother use to work the COTTON FIELDS. MY dad moved to Florida — then he worked the ORANGE GROVES. He left the FIELD WORK, and landed a JOB making good money, and brougt a HOME.

WHEN we were children — i remember going with the Bryant family to go pick oranges, but it was to get our own money ( Not much). We got paid by the bucket, and we were ALLOWED to go on the weekends. My parents believed in OUR EDUCATION — for a BETTER LIFE, and JOB.
