On Wednesday, the McDonough Police Department and the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) requested GBI to conduct an officer-involved shooting investigation that occurred inside of a state vehicle at the intersection of GA Hwy 20 and McDonough-Lovejoy Road in McDonough, GA.
Initial reports indicate two DJJ probation officers were transporting a male juvenile, 15 years old, from a group home in Macon, GA to the Martha Glaze Regional Youth Detention Center in Henry County. A female DJJ officer was driving the vehicle and a male DJJ officer and the juvenile were in the back seat.
While traveling on GA Hwy 20, the juvenile reached into the front seat and grabbed the steering wheel. The vehicle exited the roadway and the juvenile grabbed the female DJJ officer’s weapon. The juvenile shot the female DJJ officer in the hand and the male DJJ officer shot the juvenile.
The juvenile was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where he is being treated for his injuries and is in the custody of DJJ. The female officer was treated and released.
The GBI will conduct its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Henry County District Attorney’s Office for review.
